"A Breath of Fresh Air" 2007-01-07
By patcats_books_and_more (USA)
I have 3 Oreck air purifiers in my home. With 3 cats and dust allergies, I can't imagine life without them. They are literally a "breath of fresh air". There is no doubt in my mind that I would recommend the Oreck air purifiers to anyone. The pre-filter washes up quickly in warm, soapy water and is reuseable for years. The smoke filter is optional, and is actually unnecessary if the unit is used only for dust/dander removal. The air cleaning cell cleans up well when soaked in hot soapy water and set in a dish drainer to dry. I have even washed and dried mine in the dishwasher and had good luck doing this. If you are tired of stale, dust-laden air, give the Oreck air purifier a try. You'll be glad you did!

 "Oreck air purifier" 2008-06-02
By B. Farquhar (Pennsylvania)
I had one of these a few years ago (pre Katrina) and absolutely LOVED it. In a tiny appartment where the kitty litter has to be placed in the livingroom, something like this is a miracle worker. No one even knew there was a litterbox hidden right behind the sofa because this thing works so well!

The only down side is that it must be cleaned regularly or it starts making a popping noise. Its a small price to pay if you ask me. If you're too lazy to clean it once in a while, my guess is that you don't need an air purifier; you need a maid.

"More work than its worth" 2008-02-01
By Danny Nox (Mississippi USA)
Ok I bought 2 of these because it looked great on TV. No filters to replace ect. The dust lands on the collection plates in the machine and they can't hold much. You have to clean the thing every few days. If you decide you don't feel like cleaning it right now the machine creates some kind of static popping noise like a bug zapper from the dust. It is the most annoying sound that forces you to clean it or shut it off. If you have had an Ionic breeze it's the same sound only add the noise from the fan contained in this machine. I wish I had bought a real air cleaner with a hepa filter. Not this thing.

"No headaches and no sneezing!!, YaY!." 2008-08-15
By Mr. Gary F. Cady (Southern tier of N. Y. (upstate))
I have had my two Orek Xl's type 2 pro air purifiers just over 3 years and cannot imagine living without them. I will admit that there are popping noises when the plates start to get loaded but that is secondary to the feeling you get each and every morning you get up out of bed and realize that your headaches are gone, your nose don't feel plugged and you feel like a new man or woman each AND every day. We also run a whole house humidifier during the winter months, October thru March, and i'm hear to tell you that mornings and afternoons through nightime hours are just like afternoon rain showers in early summer, that is how refreshed i have felt, along with my wife, since purchasing these purifiers. Also i would like to add that we have three dogs that live inside with us and a cat with a cat box. The three little girls (dogs) have the usual doggy odors, they are shampooed twice monthly but before the Orek Purifiers you knew that we had dogs and a cat. The last three years friends and family come over for visits and holidays and ask, i'm not kidding, if we still have our pets?, i reply "yes we do", and they are still amazed at the difference that our Oreks have made on the odor department. Cooking odors?, no more, stale odors form the house being closed up for the winter?, gone, pet and cat box odors?, history. All i can do is recommend this amazing product, the rest is up to you, clean them on a regular schedule, follow the directions in the user manual and enjoy an invigorating new feeling in your general overall health, i know i have as has my wife. Come to think of it i think my dogs and the cat are healthier too, or maybe thats just wishfull thinking. Thanks for reading.

 "2 Week Efficiency" 2008-03-29
By C. Smith (Salt Lake City, UT)
This purifier worked incredibly well for the first two weeks. Then the electrostatic popping started. First an occassional pop, then it was like a machine gun going off in my room, usually at 3 am. Following the cleaning instruction seemed to make it angrier. My poor dog peed on the floor and hid under the bed. Luckily they are offering a refund.

"Happy Oreck Customer Going On 10 Years" 2009-06-10
By D. Knowles (Houston, TX)
I've tried the Hepa filter brands and found them to be unable to totally "scrub" the air as fast or through as the Oreck. My husband was a chain smoker our first 3 years of marriage and I had purchased a $400 Austin Air Healthmate air purifier. It had an enormous filter and boasted of scrubbing the air down to .01 micron. Well, honestly all it did was push the air around. There was no way to thoroughly clean the filter, and the charcoal replacement cost was just not affordable like Oreck. I've used other brands as well, but I came back to Oreck, bought a vacuum cleaner and cordless iron and have been a very pleased customer ever since.

"Very flimsy parts and crackles after first wash" 2008-03-31
By Susan Neff (Benicia, CA)
I bought two of these purifiers after watching a tv program. I was really surprised to find how cheap all the parts are for something that costs several hundred dollars (that's what I paid when I purchase it). It worked pretty well for the first few months but after I rinsed it (exactly according to directions), it started to crackle. I called Oreck and they said it crackles when something gets lodged in there. I wonder why it didn't do it for ths first few months. Overall, I'm very disappointed with this product and will never buy another Oreck again.

 "WONDERFUL" 2009-01-23
By E. A. Richards (midwestusa)
This air purifier surpassed expectation. We've had others, including the Sharper Image nightmare of a purifier that was over $400 and died within a year.. So it was with hesitation that we ordered this unit and could not be happier. I too am surprised by the previous reviewer's comment that he has to clean it every day or so, I wonder if he has something in his house (i.e. smoke/lots of pets?) that might overload a unit. We have two cats and a large home and this purifier works wonders. I have only had to clean it once or twice a month and the occasional snap, crackle and pop are just reminders when it's time. We intend to buy more.

 "No problems" 2008-11-23
By Matthew J. Davis (Cheyenne, WY)
I bought a couple of these last year for I have some health problems that require me to be in a clean air environment. These have been great they really do a good job I leave mine on highest speed all the time which is noisy but when it comes to breathing fresh air this is well worth it. It does make some snapping sounds just before you need to clean it. This just lets me know that they need cleaning. I clean my cells with Clorox clean up cleaner I just squirt them then use hot water and the job is done. the only thing is that when it comes to drying the cell before using it it takes a while but this is my only complaint

 "This is great" 2008-09-14
By D. Proviano (Manassas, VA)
I rarely write comments, but I use them for most every purchase from Amazon. Since there wasn't much here, I wanted to let everyone know my experiences with the Oreck XL air purifier.

There's only one review on here so far. The guy says he had to clean his machine every day? I've had mine, for awhile now. I've gone a couple weeks to a month and a half without cleaning the cell. Actually after a little more than a month, I just cleaned it last night. All I did was run it under the faucet and it did the job. I will need to clean it with soap and water soon though.

The only reason I can see this machine getting so dirty so fast like the other person says, is if it was in an oil based enviroment where the dirt would pile on and need to be scrubbed off.

Just an example here: My allergies got real bad last night after I had my water heater replaced. I suppose a lot of mold was kicked around from when it had been leaking. I got up in the middle of the night and ran the cell under water, with a little brushing here and there.

After letting it dry, I really noticed the difference when it started up. I then slept for hours comfortably.

The con: It makes a small snapping sound when it needs to be cleaned. I use that as a reminder. It doesn't constantly make the sound. I will from time to time, then more often as it gets dirtier. It is hardly noticable to me.

As for the charcoal filter. You don't need to have it. It is a plus. I haven't gotten a refill since I got my machine a long time ago. I am thinking about getting it though. A relative uses it and It makes the room feel and smell cleaner.

 "Will Not Buy" 2008-08-03
By S. Anderson (Ottawa, Kansas United States)
I am in the process of buying good air purifiers, as my mother, who has chronic asthma and bronchitis, is coming to my house to visit after not seeing her for almost 3 years.(we live out of state) We have some purifiers already, but wanted to get a few better ones especially for her. After reading the review from Scott Sedei, I will definitely NOT buy this product. Popping and Snapping Sounds??? OMG!!!! Thanks for the help, Scott.

 "High maintenance...sounds like a bug zapper!" 2008-05-17
By Scott J. Sedei
When I originally reviewed this product I gave it three stars. After using the product for over a year now I would take away two of those stars if I could.

I purchased three Oreck purifiers at the same time and notice very little difference in the air quality in my home.

Things I like:

The "silent" mode is great for sleeping (when the unit isn't popping and snapping). The design is attractive.

Things I don't like:

1) The rapid popping/snapping sound (like a bug zapper) the units make when the cell starts getting dirty. As another reviewer wrote - the rapid popping scared his poor dog so badly that it wet the floor. The noise is VERY annoying. You either clean it right away or turn it off because the snapping persists until something is done. Oreck recommends thorough cell cleaning every two weeks, but between the three units I have to do "quick cleanings" on at least one of them almost every day. Quick cleaning requires pulling the main cell and running a Q-Tip over the wires in front of the collection plates.

2) The Oreck infomercial misrepresents the product; the consumer pays a healthy price for this purifier believing there will be no additional costs associated with the purchase. They advertise "No Filter Replacement" - yet there is an "optional" charcoal odor absorbing filter that does need to be replaced if the unit is used to control odors. The cost of that filter at the Oreck site is $49.99.

According to my local Oreck store, the cell doesn't get real clean if only soaked in soapy water. The "optional" cell cleaner is strongly recommended to optimize the cell performance and extend the cell life. Each can of cell cleaner is $14.99. The local Oreck store recommended cleaning with cell cleaner, soaking in soapy water, and then cleaning again with more cell cleaner.

3) The collection plates in the main cell don't hold a lot of dust, and the odor absorbing filter is too small to catch much. I question how much dust is being pumped back into the air after it is "purified."

*Note: Several reviewers have suggested I use the units in extreme conditions. However, I live in a very large, brand new home; I don't smoke and have two cats so the operating conditions are far from extreme.

14 MONTH UPDATE:

After using the units for about 14 months, two of the three original machines I purchased died and are happily disposed of. The one remaining unit seems to be working well and actually goes weeks without popping and snapping. I no longer purchase the Oreck cell cleaner, following the advice of another reviewer I now use Clorox Cleanup.

I replaced one of the failed Oreck units with a Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier. I replaced the second failed Oreck with the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier. They are both larger floor models that require some space, but they outperform the Oreck units in every way, and they cost less. The charcoal pre-filters cost $9.00 to $10.00 to replace and are well worth it when I see the garbage the Honeywell pulls out of the air.
